Why are automatic weapons extremely restricted?

Because the legislators in office in the 1930s decided to do so because of the widespread use of them by organized crime members and none since then have seen fit to rescind that legislation. I haven't heard any great hue and cry to allow free access to automatic weapons, so it probably won't ever happen.
