ODD is not about free-thinking or civil disobedience. A child with ODD, when asked to close a door, will either flatly refuse, or open it as far as it will go. They usually have attachment issues, as well. Personally, I believe ODD is simply a symptom of another, deeper disorder, but I'm not a shrink.
